Building Seismic Resilience for a Carbon-Neutral Future and in Urban Environments
Patricia Persaud, Associate Professor, Geosciences, The University of Arizona,

Many vulnerable coastal communities and densely populated areas with high seismic risk and are located on top of sedimentary basins. Sedimentary basins also offer abundant energy and mineral resources, and underground storage capacity for fuels including hydrogen. However, the complex structures and tectonic evolution of sedimentary basins combined with the limitations of the built environment present some of the biggest challenges for recording high quality seismic data in these settings. Such critical observational gaps can be filled with dense nodal seismic arrays. I will discuss the scientific findings from dense arrays installed in the US Gulf Coast at an underground storage site, in the city of Yangon, Myanmar, and in the San Fernando Valley, California. I will also discuss resilience and recovery considerations that motivated hazard-related monitoring in these regions.
