Rheology of the Interface between the Mantle Wedge and the Subducting Slab

This presentation will provide an integrative perspective on the rheology of the subduction interface between the mantle wedge and subducting slab, based on a combination of lab experiments (e.g., Tokle et al., 2019; Burdette and Hirth, 2022; Shabtian and Hirth, 2025), and field obseravtions (Fisher and Hirth, 2024). These constraints provide insights into the conditions that promote decoupling at the subduction interface and new constraints on stress conditions at the updip limit and the base of the seismogenic zone.
