My research currently focuses on understanding the hydrogen cycle in the deep earth via study of hydrous phases stable at the high pressures and temperatures of Earth's interior. Specifically, I work with Jennifer Jackson to employ synchrotron X-ray techniques that elucidate the elastic and electronic properties of (Al,Fe)-phase H: a hydrous phase that could form in a subducting slab at the base of the mantle transition zone. Better understanding of such properties of high-pressure hydrous phases will be critical in discerning whether they may be visible in imaging of the earth's mantle by seismology or electrical conductivity.
